GO MAVS

Wednesday
Dallas on Dallas

I hate days like today. Its the day off. The cooling period. Chance to give the players and coaches a chance to travel and rest. But for days like this for fans, its torture. We sit waiting. We pretend to watch other games and actually care about their outcomes. But all we are really thinking about is how our team could crush this team, and how are stats match up against theirs. I love basketball, I could watch it a lot. But truth be told, it's so much more fun to watch when you actually care about the team. Notice I said team, and not the owner. I could care less if Mark Cuban ever makes another dollar. I think people (with the exception of Nolan Ryan, because let's face it, he is a legend) who own major sports teams are all crooks and thiefs. I am thoroughly convinced if Mark Cuban could sell his own mother to Cuba for a set of nice Cuban cigars, he would in a heartbeat. I have no sympathy for someone who takes the money they have made off of devoted Texas fans like myself, and spends it to budget films about anti-military movies. Ya, he did that. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but in the middle of a war, when I'm the one defending your right to the coin in your pocket called capitolism, Cuban really should of thought twice before writing that check.

Another day, another dollar. I am breathing  sigh of relief this morning as the Mavs keep the entire Dallas community's dreams alive. The recipe for success last night? Leadership. The team finally had a good ebb and flow tide of give and take relationships. Jason Terry, not a starter, but one of our strongest off the bench came alive in the 2nd quarter to give the boost Dallas needed. And Dirk decided to take the reigns in the 3rd quarter and prove to everyone why he chose to stay at Dallas. I HAVE FAITH.

The key word of tonight: Adjustments. Adjust meaning the Dallas Mavericks need to adapt and overcome. Game four is in the past. But, it doesn't mean they can't learn from the critical mistakes that lost a crucial win. When Brandon Roy let loose on the Mavs last week, they were utterly defenseless. They entire squad blamed themselves, but it was Dirk who was looking for move forward. "You can always after the fact talk about what you could have done or should've done, you can go a million ways about it. And afterwards, you're a lot smarter. But that doesn't help anyone right now." Preach on Dirk. I can only hope the rest of the team has this sort of ambition.

Sunday the 24th
Dallas on Dallas.

Embarrassment doesn't even begin to cover it. The Mavericks are one of the most solid, techincally skilled teams in the NBA. They have a flow of leaders that balance each other out, and a coach who understands his players. So why do they keep losing games? Where is the mental tenacity that is a necessity for every single professional basketball player? The 4th quarter should be everyone's strongest moment. And last night, the Mavs had none to speak of. They blew a 23 point lead and missed a buzzer shot to lose the game by 2. I may still have faith left, but I am losing hope.

My ups and downs with the Dallas Mavericks

I was asked to put some fingers to keyboards about my love for the Dallas Mavericks. Here are five days worth of thoughts.

4/20/11

Faith is belief in the unknown. Faith is trusting and putting hope into a possible outcome. And for the past few years, even the most loyal Dallas Mavericks fans have lost a little faith. For what seems like a hundred season,  we Mavs fans have been faced with watching our beloved basketball team falter at the first step. The team will shine in the pre-season, and a thought creeps into our head "maybe this is it." But we instantly squash it, because we know it's far too early. Then regular season games start to fly by and suddenly we are in the win column leaving other teams in the dust. Dirk is posting games with double digit points and rebounds, Jason Terry is sinking 3's, and our backbone, Kidd, is providing an ever present steadiness in the face of a long season. Fans catch themselves saying out loud, "We got this." And then it's play-offs. And we suck. And yes I say we. Because basketball is a community sport, when the Mavs lose, we fans lose to. But even still, after all of the years of shock and disbelief at our lack of playoff winning, I still wear my Mavericks jersey and will proudly walk into any sports bar saying ,"Go Mavs." It is this kind of faith that I believe will win the Dallas Mavericks an NBA championship. We have the talent, the spark, and the desire. Now we just have to finish.

It's round one of the play-offs this year, the Mavs are up 2-0 in a 7 game series. We basically annihilated our opponent last Saturday to try and prove to the world that we belong here. So I leave my fellow fans with this hint of advice. Do it for Dallas, do it for Dirk, do it for yourself. Even in the face of adversity, ya gotta have a little faith.
